What Makes an IBC "Food Grade"?
The term "food grade" for IBC totes refers to containers that meet FDA 21 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) requirements for materials in contact with food and beverages. Specifically, the HDPE resin used in the bottle must be FDA-approved for food contact, and the container must not impart taste, odor, or harmful substances to the stored product.
FDA 21 CFR 177.1520
This regulation governs the use of olefin polymers (including HDPE) in food-contact applications. For an IBC tote to be food-grade, the HDPE bottle must be manufactured from resins that comply with 21 CFR 177.1520 specifications, including extractives limits and additive restrictions. New IBC totes from reputable manufacturers come with material certificates documenting compliance.
Can Used IBC Totes Be Food Grade?
This is one of the most common questions we receive. The answer is nuanced. A used IBC tote can be used for food-contact applications IF: (1) it was originally manufactured with FDA-compliant materials, (2) it was only previously used for food-grade materials, (3) it has been properly cleaned and sanitized, and (4) there is documentation of its previous use history. In practice, many food processors prefer reconditioned totes with brand-new bottles to eliminate uncertainty about previous contents.
Cleaning Standards for Food-Grade Use
Food-grade cleaning goes beyond basic washing. The FDA expects documented cleaning procedures that include alkaline detergent wash at 160°F minimum, acid rinse to remove mineral deposits, sanitization with an approved sanitizer (chlorine, peracetic acid, or equivalent), final potable water rinse, and verified absence of cleaning chemical residues. At Oklahoma IBC, our Deep Clean and Full Reconditioning service tiers meet these requirements.
Documentation and Traceability
Food safety regulations increasingly require traceability documentation. For IBC totes used in food applications, maintain records of the tote's origin and previous contents, cleaning and sanitization dates and methods, certificate of material compliance (from manufacturer), and any reconditioning work performed. Oklahoma IBC provides complete documentation packages for food-grade totes upon request.
Common Food-Grade Applications
IBC totes are widely used in the food industry for: fruit juice and concentrate storage, wine and beverage production, cooking oil and edible fat transport, liquid sweeteners and syrups, food-grade cleaning chemicals, flavoring and extract storage. For each application, verify that the specific food product is compatible with HDPE — while HDPE is broadly food-safe, some products (particularly those with high fat content or essential oils) may require additional compatibility verification.
